If you are a hardcore realist like me, there is a universal truth we agree with. Movies, songs, and countless cheesy romantic novellas have ruined the dating scene of today.
Everyone is running after their Miss or mister perfect with chiseled abs, and jawline of Robert Pattinson, looking for their forever after. If you think this sounds like a bunch of nonsense, and want to date someone who does not have their head stuck in a cloud of cotton candy and pipe dreams, here’s a handy guide.
Set Realistic Expectations
You know that crush from college, who sparkled when he walked on sunshine? He isn’t coming over to your home with a boombox over his head any time soon. Preferences are fine. But if you are going to reject every person who is an inch shorter than your ideal height, or is packing a few pounds extra, you better get used to taking long walks down a windy road all by yourself.
Long Term Or Short Term
Probably the first thing you should ask yourself and the other person. What kind of partner are you looking at? If you have found a cute girl from Tinder to love and cherish for the rest of your life, don’t be surprised when she ditches you in a week. If you have long term dating expectations, your date better shares the same expectation out of the relationship.
Sharing Is Caring
Look, this is the 21st century. Chivalry isn’t dead. Yet. You can expect your Prince Perfect to open the car door, or hold the chair. But if you are going to order Merlot and sneak off to the powder room when the bill arrives, you will only meet guys who are not into it for the long term. Share both happiness and sadness. If you expect him to treat you like a queen, treat him like a king.
Financial Stalking
When you are dating in your 20s, this might not be as relevant. But as close as you get to 30, you should start checking out the Facebook profile of your date for more than just bikini pics. Do they have a job? Do they own a house? What kind of party policy do they have? Does their lifestyle seem way beyond your reach?
Are They Supportive?
When you discuss your dreams and hobbies, do they roll their eyes? Did they just say they are looking for a house-spouse? Understand how they see your career and passions, and whether they will weather a storm with you in the future.
Chore-O-Meter
This is for all the overgrown men who proudly say ‘I am 30 and my mom does my undies’, or the ladies who say they are bad cooks. Reality is disappointing and chores need doing. If they don’t do it now. They probably won’t do it after the wedding either.
